First-ever clothing factory for prisoners in Narayanganj jail

Bangladesh’s first-ever garment factory, set up inside Narayanganj district jail will facilitate income for prisoners. The factory set to open today, will be able to provide work to some 300-400 prisoners trained by Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA). The trained prisoners will be able to work in the mini-garment factory in two shifts. Their earnings will be credited to their respective accounts which their families can also withdraw.

Apparel exporters wary of highway robberies

Recent incidents of robberies on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway are worrying the apparel exporters as it throws them off their tight delivery schedules. The country’s largest apparel exporter Noman Group was subjected to three instances of robbery in the past one and a half years. In 2015 and 2016 there were 18 and five cases of highway robbery respectively according to data from Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters.

BEZA to create 2 lakh employments by establishing tourism-parks

Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) is setting up three tourism parks at Cox’s Bazar district with a target to create two lakh employments. The parks are likely to create opportunities for additional two billion dollar annual economic activities. The three tourism parks are Sabrang Tourism Park, Naf Tourism Park (Jaliardwip) and Sonadia Eco Tourism Park. The development work is likely to be completed in 2018.
