The government on Thursday extended the deadline for completing remediation works in the readymade garment factories, which are being inspected under the joint initiative of the Bangladesh government and the International Labour Organisation, up to December this year.

Bangladesh, the second largest exporter of apparel products, has outperformed China and India in ethical compliance in the apparel segment in terms of workplace safety in the aftermath of the Rana Plaza collapse.

April 25, 2018 marked the fifth year anniversary of the collapse of Rana Plaza. The entire nation and the world commemorated the tragic day on which the commercial building, which housed three separate garments factories, collapsed in less than 30 seconds, resulting in the untimely death of over 1,100 workers.

Two new bodies will act as transitional safety supervisors in the garment sector after the expiry of the tenure of Accord and Alliance.

The government has formed a joint monitoring committee comprised of representatives of brands and buyers, International Labour Organisation, garment factory owners and trade unions to evaluate the status of factory remediation work under Accord and Alliance and the readiness of national regulatory body to take over post-remediation monitoring from the buyers’ platforms.

The government, pressed by the expiry of two global buyers’ platforms in July, is planning to strengthen with its own fund its remediation coordination cell, which will take over the responsibility of the post-remediation oversight of readymade garment factories, as the ILO fund is yet to be available.

The formation of Accord and Alliance in 2013 and their activities for workplace safety in the RMG sector have led to important organisational learning for Bangladesh.

H&M in its new high-end product Arket introduced “transparent tagging,” where they mention the supplying factory names as well as some other key details of manufacturing.
