Body to finalise draft labour law suiting int’l prescription

The government formed a high-level committee to finalise the draft amendments to labour-and EPZ laws accommodating all labour-rights issues raised by western stakeholders, failing which Bangladesh’s European GSP may also be at risk, the Financial Express reported.

As per a recipe coming from last month’s International Labour Conference (ILC), the government has to remake the laws within a timeframe set by the meet, the report said citing officials.

Home textile exports fail to reach potential

Despite having huge potential in home textile, Bangladesh is unable to expand its market share in the European Union because of duty benefits extended to Pakistan, a cotton grower, the Daily Star reported.

The report said that Bangladesh is a 100 percent cotton importer.

RMG faces challenge to woo mid-level talents: Study

The growing Bangladesh economy has created many opportunities for young workers in the labour market, but such opportunities in turn create new challenges for the RMG sector to attract required talent – particularly in supervisory level, Financial Express reported.

Citing a recent study titled ‘Overcoming barriers to female managers in the RMG sector’, the report said that the economy of Bangladesh has grown at a rapid rate over the past 25 years, driven by the remarkable growth of the ready-made garment (RMG) sector, but opportunities in the broader economy in turn created new challenges for the RMG to attract the talented youths – thereby creating shortage in number of required supervisory talents.

Mobile money boosts lifestyles of garment workers: study

Providing the option of transferring money fast at an affordable cost, mobile financial services have improved the lifestyles of garment workers and their relatives in rural areas, the Daily Star reported citing a new study.

Rural households also reduced borrowing, increased savings and saw gains in health, education and agricultural productivity, said Prof Jonathan Morduch of New York University, the report added.
