26.9 million people are self-employed in Bangladesh
Some 44.3 per cent or 26.9 million employed people are own-account workers, according to the Labour Force Survey 2016-17. They are basically self-employed with no employees in their informal sector enterprises. They engage in producing goods exclusively for the final use by their families. The survey also showed that 39.1 per cent or 23.8 million employed people work in others’ organisations.
Survey results indicate low work ethics in Bangladesh
A survey report published by the global accounting giant Earnst & Young says Bangladeshi corporate and business professionals consider bribery an essential part of doing business here, though it is unethical. Of the professionals surveyed, 58% consider paying bribes as unethical but necessary to conduct business in the country. The report highlighted Bangladesh’s economic growth and promise of the emerging market. It identified the key growth sectors of the economy.
Remittance inflow up by 17.04%
Remittance inflow in the first nine months rose by 17.04 per cent to that of the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. As per Bangladesh Bank (BB) data, expatriate Bangladeshis sent US $10,761.29 million through various channels during the July-March period of FY18. The country received $9,194.59 million remittance during the same period in the preceding fiscal year.
