BGMEA plans to form platform like Accord, Alliance
Local garment makers have proposed the formation of a factory inspection and remediation agency similar to foreign agencies Accord and Alliance to strengthen workplace safety in the apparel sector, the Daily Star reported.
Once registered under relevant laws, the platform, to be called ‘Shonman’ (respect), would be run under the guidance of an ombudsman chosen by the Prime Minister’s Office, the report added.
RMG facing bad days: Thousand of factories closed
So far, some 4,300 readymade garment factories have been shut down for multifarious reasons including lack of sufficient work order from foreign buyers, higher production cost, strong Taka against dollar and worldwide recession, according to the stakeholders of the RMG sector, the Daily Observer reported.
The small and medium factories have already closed down their business. Near about one thousand more factories are going to shut down soon, according to sources, the report said adding that most of the factories were located at Malibagh, Khilkhat and other areas of the capital Dhaka as well as in Tongi areas.
Garment workers may get festival allowance by Aug 24
Bangladesh’s imports grew 9 percent year-on-year in fiscal 2016-17 as the demand for capital machinery, industrial raw materials and food grain at home soared, the Daily Star reported.
More than $47 billion worth of goods were brought in to the country last fiscal year, according to data from the Bangladesh Bank, the report added.
