A 229 per cent rise in rice imports enhanced country’s overall import growth by over 37 per cent or US$1.22 billion in July, the Financial Express reported.
They said the country had to count such higher trade bills at the outset (first month) of the current fiscal year on account of substantial amount of rice import for crop losses caused by flood onslaughts, the report added.
Higher back-to-back imports for readymade garment (RMG) products and capital machinery also contributed to the rise in national imports, the report said.
Vegetable prices soar as floods damage farmland
The prices of vegetables have skyrocketed in the city’s kitchen markets as the monsoon floods devastated large areas of farmland, Dhaka Tribune reported.
Of them, the prices of onion have risen almost 100% from a month ago. The vegetable was selling at between Tk50 and Tk55 per kilogram at different city markets on Monday, up from Tk30-35 in late July, the report added.
