Bangladesh on board UN paperless trade

Bangladesh yesterday signed an agreement on adopting paperless trade, an initiative of the United Nations to make export and import easier by reducing bureaucratic tangles through the use of technology, the Daily Star reported.

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed signed the Framework Agreement on Facilitation of Cross-border Paperless Trade in Asia and the Pacific on behalf of Bangladesh at the headquarters of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in Bangkok, the report added.

Take enough preparations to protect Bangladesh’s interests: CPD

Bangladesh should undertake adequate preparation and be actively involved in agenda-building and negotiations in the context of upcoming ministerial conference of the World Trade Organisation, said the Centre for Policy Dialogue, the Daily Star reported.

“There is a need for more informed understanding about Bangladesh’s key interests in the context of the upcoming 11th WTO ministerial conference,” the report quoted the organization as saying.

BANGLADESH FORMS WORKERS’ FUND FOR RMG FACTORIES

Bangladesh has created a fund for the garment industry which will be used to compensate workers or their children in case of injuries or death at the workplace. Garment factory owners have been urged to keep workers’ welfare in mind and give them a share of the annual profits as workers are the main instrument to keep their business operational, Fashionating World reported.

Labor laws have been amended for the welfare of workers. Safety and security measures in garment industries and factories have been beefed up. Wages of workers in the readymade garment sector have been raised. Advance tax for readymade garment industries has been reduced to 0.70 per cent, the report added.
