Minimum Wage Board proposes Tk 13,500 minimum wage for tannery workers
The Minimum Wage Board has proposed Tk 13,500 as gross monthly pay for tannery workers. The proposal, if approved, will lead to an increase of 54 per cent from the existing Tk 8,740 set in 2011. The board has incorporated five grades for workers and four grades for employees. The board would make its final recommendation on the minimum wage for the sector to the government after considering the objection or suggestion, if it gets any.
One million workers went abroad from Bangladesh in 2017
A record over one million workers were sent abroad with jobs in 2017 from Bangladesh. It was highest in the history of overseas employment sector previously which was was 875,055 in 2008. Of the total 100,8525 workers sent 122,000 were women. The growth of employment increased about 33 per cent in 2017 compared to that of previous year.
Remittance inflow falls by $72.46m in 2017
The remittance inflow fell by 0.53 per cent or US$72.46 million to $13.54 billion in 2017 from $13.61 billion a year before. Bangladeshi overseas workers sent $6.93 billion during the July-December period of 2017 against $6.17 billion in the same period of the previous calendar year. The remittances increased in the H2 2017 following higher exchange rate of the US dollar against the local currency.
