Trade with Canada may cross $3 billion by 2021
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Sunday said Bangladesh’s exports to Canada will reach $3 billion by 2021 if the present trade facilities offered by the Canadian government remain unchanged. Bangladesh currently enjoys duty free access to Canadian markets. Last year Bangladesh’s exports to Canada were worth $1.1 billion, while imports from Canada were worth $600 million.
Bangladesh signs deal with Chinese firm for setting up power plant
Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) signed a joint venture agreement with China Huadian Hong Kong Company Ltd (CHDHK) to construct a 1,320-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar at a potential cost of $2 billion. Under the deal, a joint venture will be set up within a month to start the construction. Each party holds equal share and the joint venture will get 48 months to complete the project.
Workers Resource Centre launched for capacity development
A Workers Resource Centre (WRC) has been launched to build the capacity of trade unions in the Bangladesh Ready Made Garment (RMG) sector. A joint platform between two leading worker organizations – the National Coordination Committee on Workers Education (NCCWE) and the IndustriALL Bangladesh Council (IBC) the WRC will help trade unions operate more effectively and provide better services to their members. The initiative is supported by the International Labour Organization (ILO)’s Social Dialogue and Harmonious Industrial Relations project funded by Sweden and Denmark.
