Ban on direct cargo flight to UK may go: Rushanara
The country has made laudable progress in safety and security services at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for lifting the ban on direct cargo flights from Dhaka to the UK, said Rushanara Ali, the UK Prime Minister’s trade envoy for Bangladesh, the Daily Star reported.
Ali, who is a member of the British parliament, said she has already raised the issue of ban to her prime minister, the report added.
Importers suffer for a dearth of lighters at Ctg port
A shortage of lighter vessels at the Chittagong port along with landing stations is causing importers to pay extra charges and demurrages, forcing consumers to ultimately bear the costs, the Daily Star reported.
Importers say Water Transport Cell, comprising owners of these vessels of capacities ranging from 800 to 3,000 tonnes, does not have sufficient watercrafts, the report added.
August imports fall over 7.0pc despite big rice buy
Overall imports fell by over 7.0 per cent or US$294.53 million in August despite big emergency rice buy from abroad, the Financial Express reported.
One obvious reason cited by sources is that lower imports for industries tipped the balance a little bit, the report added.
Over 300 RMG workers protest in Dhaka against ‘sudden layoffs’
More than 300 workers have demonstrated in Dhaka claiming they have been laid off by Q-Point Fashions Ltd, a readymade garment factory located in Savar, bdnews24.com reported.
The workers filed an application to the Department of Labour on Aug 31 seeking permission to form a union. This angered the company and the authorities laid off 322 workers on Sept 11, said ‘Jewel’, who used to work as a supervisor at the factory, the report added.
