Bangladesh garment makers propose remediation agency

Garment makers in Bangladesh have proposed forming a factory inspection and remediation agency, similar to Accord on Fire and Building Safety and Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety created by Western nations, to reinforce workplace safety in the apparel sector. The agency will operate under an ombudsman chosen by the prime minister’s office, Fibre2Fashion reported.

BGMEA claims all RMG workers got festival allowances, wages

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association on Thursday claimed that all the readymade garment factories affiliated with the trade body have paid festival allowances to their workers, New Age reported.

‘Hundred per cent factories have paid festival allowances to the workers and most of the factories have either made partial or full wage payment for the month of August based on the discussions with their workers,’ the report quoted the BGMEA president Md Siddiqur Rahman as saying.

Bangladesh RMG sector seeks VAT relief

Bangladesh’s garment manufacturers and exporters want full exemption from paying value-added tax on different service charges for export-oriented sectors, particularly readymade garment industries. They want a withdrawal of VAT on bills for utility consumption including gas, electricity and water, since the export-oriented readymade garment sector is completely VAT-exempted as per a 1991 act, Fashionating World reported.

SMART Myanmar trains garment units in chemical management

European Union-funded project SMART Myanmar recently launched a six-month advanced chemical management training programme for garment and textile factories in Myanmar. The training uses a curriculum developed by the Promotion of Social and Environmental Standards in the Industry (PSES) project, a joint initiative of the governments of Bangladesh and Germany, Fibre2Fashion reported.
