The Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety announced the completion of full safety remediation in 54 more Alliance-affiliated factories.

The government has asked all factories from the National Initiative (NI) under the Tripartite Plan of Action to complete their remediation process by April 2018. As part of the government’s initiative to ensure RMG factory safety after the Rana Plaza disaster, the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) held a meeting  with the factory owners from the NI to evaluate the progress of their remediation in making a safer workplace on Sunday.

The Remediation Coordination Cell (RCC), formed to monitor workplace safety in the garment sector, should be independent and credible so that it can take sound decisions to avert further industrial accidents. “If there is a good system in place and if the retailers and brands continue sourcing from Bangladesh, it is expected that there will not be any disaster in the garment sector,” said Jim Moriarty, executive director of the Alliance, the factory inspection platform of 28 North American retailers.

RMG factories that did not meet the criteria on workplace safety by retailers’ platforms are now seeing a sharp decline in the number of work orders from foreign buyers.
