One does not give much thought to the export market for home textiles and terry towels in this country. Yet this USD-1.2-billion-a-year export subsector in the readymade garments (RMG) industry occupies a special place in the garments sector of Bangladesh as raw material used in the making of products is local yarn made from cotton waste.

The recorded success of Bangladesh in reducing gender inequality is being skewed by the high proportion of women at the top of the political ladder and the reliance on cheap female labour in the garment industry, analysts have said. The World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report released on November 2 revealed that Bangladesh leads South Asia in terms of gender equality.

Garment shipment to the US, Bangladesh's single largest export destination, grew only 3.41 percent in the first quarter of the fiscal year in a worrying development for exporters who hope to hit $50 billion in receipts by 2020. In the first quarter of 2017-18, apparel shipments fetched $1.36 billion, according to the Export Promotion Bureau.

Bangladesh has so far implemented around 41 per cent of the 31 common global trade facilitation (TF) measures to reduce trade cost. The revelation was made public on Wednesday in a report on the Second Global Survey on Trade Facilitation and Paperless Trade, jointly conducted by five United Nations Regional Commissions.

Bangladesh has gone one notch down in the World Bank's ranking of ease of doing business mainly due to the hurdle businesses face here at the start of their operations. The WB's Doing Business report 2018 released yesterday showed that Bangladesh achieved slightly more points than last year's but still its ranking slipped for fall in some indicators in addition to starting business.

Per capita rice consumption in Bangladesh declined fast between 2010 and 2016 thanks to increased income that has enabled people to diversify diets with a higher intake of non-cereal foods.
