Aimed at doubling value addition from $1 billion per million bales to $2 billion per million bales during five years and double textile exports from $13.1 billion to $26 billion, besides facilitating investment of additional $5 billion in machinery and technology, the textile policy 2014-19 has remained fail to achieve desired targets.

Textile exports rose 7.2 percent to $8.79 billion during the first eight months of the current fiscal year of 2018 as value-added sector continued to post recovery in foreign earnings, official data showed on Tuesday.

There is no denying the fact that Pakistan’s textile industry has become regionally uncompetitive, but it is not because of the industry’s inefficiency.

The Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) is urging authorities to relax duties on yarn import to encourage value addition, reduce cost of doing business and bridge the gap between production and consumption.
