FBCCI president voices manpower crisis in RMG sector
Shafiul Islam, president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry has expressed concern over acute crisis of skilled manpower in readymade garment factories at a seminar on Saturday. The seminar was organised by Dhaka University’s Industrial Relations and Labour Studies where textile entrepreneur Mohiuddin said that without expert manpower the industry would never go ahead. BGMEA vice-president (finance) Mohammed Nasir expressed the need of technical knowledge for local manpower saying some organizations were forced to hire foreign nationals with high salaries.
Congestion responsible for poor show at Chittagong port
Despite prolonged vessel and container congestion throughout the year, Chittagong port handled about 2.56 million twenty-foot equivalent units of import, export and empty containers last year. The percentage was up 9.36 percent from a year ago, a growth rate lowest in the last five years. Shortage of jetty, yard and equipment facilities at the port were identified as the issues responsible for the decline in growth.
Govt issues guarantee for Payra power plant project
The government has issued a US$ 1.0 billion worth of state guarantee in favour of Chinese loan for implementing a 1320-mw Payra coal-based power plant project. The fund will be sourced from Exim Bank of China which requires a guarantee from the government. Bangladesh-China Power Company Limited (BCPCL) will build the coal-based power plant in Patuakhali. An estimated cost of over US$ 1.98 billion will be required for the implementation of the 1320mw Payra power plant project.
