Govt forms committee to amend labor laws
The government has formed a committee to finalise the draft of the amendments to the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006 within the timeframe it promised to the International Labour Organisation, New Age reported.
The nine-member convening committee headed by the labour secretary would finalise the initial draft of the amended labour laws to produce it before the stakeholders and later it will prepare the final draft to produce it before a cabinet meeting, the report added.
Apparel exports to EU sluggish
Bangladesh’s exports of apparel items to the European Union remained sluggish in fiscal 2016-17 mainly due to Brexit, national elections in major European countries, depreciation of the euro against the dollar, prolonged labour unrest at home and poor port services, the Daily Star reported.
Exports to the EU grew only 3.49 percent year-on-year to $17.75 billion in fiscal 2016-17, while the growth was 11.66 percent in the year before, according to Bangladesh Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data, the report added.
Global chemical giant helps garment workers improve hygiene
Global chemical giant BASF is supporting a Tk 23 million programme to improve hygiene among the readymade garment workers, the Financial Express reported.
The company also handed over a cheque for Tk 5.1 million to the government’s workers welfare fund as part of its net profit between 2006 and 2015, the report added.
