Bangladesh ranked 177th in ease of doing business

Bangladesh has gone one notch down in the World Bank's ranking of ease of doing business mainly due to the hurdle businesses face here at the start of their operations. The WB's Doing Business report 2018 released yesterday showed that Bangladesh achieved slightly more points than last year's but still its ranking slipped for fall in some indicators in addition to starting business.

Diversity in export basket bears good fruit for Bangladesh

Shipments of non-apparel items rose 7.49 percent year-on-year to $1.51 billion in the first quarter of the fiscal year as the country is diversifying its export basket to cut reliance on garments. Tea, frozen fish, jute and jute goods, leather and leather goods, furniture, ceramics, shrimps, vegetables, bicycles and terry towel performed better in the export markets during the quarter from a year earlier.

Cost of living in Dhaka has risen 71 percent

People, particularly those who belong to the lower income groups, have been reeling under the weight of rising cost of living for some years now. A report in a leading Bangla daily on October 27 spelled out the situation in a nutshell. According to the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), the cost of living for Dhaka residents has risen 71 percent over the period 2009–2016. This survey is based on a calculation of cost increases of 114 foodstuffs and 14 utility services (and does not include cost rise of education, health and daily travel).
