Jute goods exports to India slumped 52pc

The value of the exports of jute goods to India have slumped by 52 per cent in wake of anti-dumping duties. The value of the exports have dwindled by at least Tk 775.79 crore in the period from January to November compared to the corresponding period last year. The figure was 2.7 lakh tonnes during the same time last year. The exports of jute products have declined drastically following an anti-dumping export duties imposed by India’s finance ministry on certain jute products—jute yarn/twine, hessian fabric and jute sacking bags—from Bangladesh and Nepal.

RPGCL invites bidders for setting up LNG terminal at Payra

Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited (RPGCL) has invited expressions of interest (EoI) from prospective bidders to set up a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Payra maritime port area in Patuakhali. The 5.5 Mtpa terminal, known as a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), would be constructed on a BOOT (build, own, operate, transfer) basis. The interested bidder may either be a single entity or joint venture of more than one firms and sub-contractor or associate firms may also be included. The last date for submission of EoI is January 30, 2018.

WB lends $245m for safety net programmes

The World Bank (WB) has approved a loan of $245 million to make the country’s social safety-net programmes more accountable and transparent. The financing to the ongoing Safety Net Systems for the Poorest Project aims to benefit nine million poorest households. The World Bank’s total commitment to the project stands at $745 million now, which is due to close on Jun 30, 2019.

Chittagong port ranked 71st among top ports in the world

Chittagong seaport has been ranked 71st in 2016 among top 100 ports across the world. The previous rank of the port was 98 in the year 2008, which has advanced 27 notches in container-handling over the period of last eight years, a record-setting feat. The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) will observe the achievement on Tuesday through a function at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital.
