A group representing some of the largest apparel brands in the US and Europe – including Gap, H&M and ASOS – expressed “growing concern” on Tuesday over several controversial labour laws and ongoing court cases against unionists described as restrictive and unjust.

Acting as a backward-linkage industry of the Readymade Garment (RMG) sector and other export-oriented industries, the net export earnings of the Garments Accessories and Packaging (GAP) sector was $6.70 billion during the 2016-17 financial year (FY).

Some news highlights relevant to RMG sector: Twenty RMG retailers write to GoB to form new wage board, adopt regular review procedure and address the cause of the Ashulia unrest through social dialogue. Among the signatories were H&M, C&A, Esprit, GAP, Next, VF Corporation, Primark, Inditex and Li & Fung.
