India’s labour-intensive industries are languishing. Not only are exports of these industries in the doldrums, industrial production data also shows tepid growth in these sectors.

Against the backdrop of a decline in exports this year, India on Tuesday unveiled additional fiscal incentives of around Rs 8,500 crore to promote shipments from the country for labour-intensive sectors like leather, carpet and marine products.

Technology and its new advances are a reality in today's world. One such advancement is robots with the capability to perform many human tasks. So much that robots are now being made that can replace workers.

China remains the undisputed global giant in the textile and apparel industry. Its share of global apparel export is about 37 percent while the share of Bangladesh, the second largest readymade garment exporter in the world, is only about 6 percent. So, it is completely understandable that the actions of China will obviously influence the competitiveness of the other manufacturing hubs like ours.

Hit by a sharp decline in textile exports in the current fiscal year, India's commerce and industry ministry has announced doubling an incentive under the Merchandise Export from India Scheme (MEIS) for garment exporters with immediate effect.
