Garment exports to the US grew 2.90 percent year-on-year to $1.87 billion in the first four months of the year as Bangladeshi manufacturers benefit from the Trump administration's abandonment of the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

India’s labour-intensive industries are languishing. Not only are exports of these industries in the doldrums, industrial production data also shows tepid growth in these sectors.

The garment-textile industry expects to rake in US$31 billion in exports by the end of 2017, a year-on-year rise of 10.23%. The Vietnam Textile & Apparel Association (VITAS) revealed the information at a press conference in Hanoi on December 4.

Executive director of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Mustafizur Rahman sees the US pullout from the TPP as a sort of relief for Bangladesh since Vietnam could have enjoyed tariff preferences on the US market under such arrangement.

“The TPP was a matter of worry for us as Vietnam was a member of this trade bloc. So, it is good news for us that the deal has been scrapped,” said Mustafizur Rahman, executive director of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), a private think tank.

বেসরকারি গবেষণা সংস্থা সেন্টার ফর পলিসি ডায়ালগের (সিপিডি) অতিরিক্ত গবেষণা পরিচালক খন্দকার গোলাম মোয়াজ্জেম কালের কণ্ঠকে বলেন, ট্রাম্পের বাণিজ্যনীতিতে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের নতুন প্রশাসনের সংরক্ষণমুলক নীতি ফুটে উঠছে। ট্রাম্প বহুমুখী আঞ্চলিক বাণিজ্য চুক্তি বাতিল করে দ্বিপক্ষীয় চুক্তিতে যাওয়ার কথা বলছেন। অর্থাৎ ট্রাম্প প্রশাসন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের অভ্যন্তরীণ বিনিয়োগ, কর্মসংস্থান ও বাণিজ্যকে অগ্রাধিকার দেওয়ার নীতি গ্রহণ করছে।
