NGOs to face funding restrictions as new regulations come into force
Rights and advocacy-based NGOs are seeing hard times ahead after decades of successful collaboration with the government. The Foreign Donations (Voluntary Activities) Regulation Bill 2016 (FDRB), that was passed on October 13, 2016 put them in an uncomfortable position as they started running out of funds and endured bureaucratic delays and tighter scrutiny from the government.
Following the new NGO law there has also been a funding shortage from foreign donors and development partners for rights advocacy programmes.
Marks & Spencer appoints first country manager to source more from Bangladesh
Marks & Spencer, British retail giant, appointed Shwapna Bhowmick as the first Bangladeshi country manager to continue sourcing growth in the country. M&S sources a large chunk of its garment items from Bangladesh and the value is expected to hit $700 million this year.
The amount of sourcing from Bangladesh by M&S has grown by at least 30 percent year-on-year in the past three years.
New research to be undertaken for exploring new manpower markets
The government has appointed a research firm to carry out a survey on labour markets in 52 countries, including 20 new ones, across the world. A separate labour market research cell has been set up in the Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry to explore new labour markets side by side safeguarding the existing ones.
