BGMEA wants urgent steps to solve port crisis

Leaders of the country’s apparel sector expressed concern over the ongoing congestion at Chittagong port and sought immediate steps to resolve the crisis for averting possible damage to the export-oriented industry, Financial Express reported.

If the situation prevails, they feared, it would create an adverse impact on the sector as the port handles around 80 per cent of the total apparel exports. It might cause failure in meeting the lead time, resulting in shifting of orders to competitor countries like Ethiopia, India, Myanmar and Vietnam, the report added.

NCINGA AND ROBI PARTNER UP TO BOOST BANGLADESH GARMENT INDUSTRY

Robi, the second largest network operator in Bangladesh recently joined hands with nCinga Innovations. The agreement will see nCinga introduce IoT based smart factory solutions to the garment, or more accurately, the Ready Made Garment sector of the country, Read Me reported.

Bangladesh to Digitally Map Entire Garment Sector in Effort to Ensure Responsible Sourcing

In the continued effort to improve conditions in its garment sector, Bangladesh has undertaken an initiative to digitally map all of its apparel factories, Sourcing Journal reported.

The project, dubbed Digital RMG Factory Mapping in Bangladesh (DRFM-B), marks a major move for the sourcing country in creating a more transparent garment sector. The mapping will be managed and implemented by Dhaka’s BRAC University Centre for Entrepreneurship Development, with strategic partners including the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the C&A Foundation, according to a statement from the C&A Foundation, the report added.

BGMEA members say no to Accord extension after 2018

RMG manufacturers do not want that the tenure of Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh be extended after its expiry on June 2018 to monitor safety standards in the sector, Dhaka Tribune reported.

Demanding an alternative platform for such monitoring in the ready-made garment sector, they also sought Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s intervention in getting rid of Accord, the report added.

Iran keen to import RMG from Bangladesh

Iranian Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Abbas Vaezi has expressed his country’s willingness to import readymade garments (RMG) from Bangladesh, the Daily Sun reported.

In an exclusive interview with the daily sun in the capital, he said that Iran imports most of the garments it needs from countries like China and Turkey and sometimes buys Bangladeshi garments from third countries, the report added.
